Dear [NAME],
India reached an important milestone on 6 April 2026, with the Kalpakkam Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) attaining criticality. This marks the operational start of Stage II of India’s three-stage nuclear programme and a major step towards long-term energy security and self-reliance.
Fast breeder technology allows power generation while producing additional nuclear fuel, significantly improving resource efficiency and reducing import dependence. The PFBR also enables India’s future transition to thorium-based energy, leveraging one of the country’s most abundant natural resources.
Commercial power generation is expected by late 2026 or early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. This development reflects a long-term national investment in clean, stable baseload power supporting India’s low-carbon growth. |
